Among the reasons for attempting this study is a conviction that criticism of Dostoyevsky, voluminous and valuable as it is, still has gaps waiting to be filled. One significant aspect in particular has almost escaped attention – his humor. Dostoyevsky was many things besides a humorist, but humor certainly deserves to be more widely recognized than it is as an integral part of his work.
