To Those for whom German wine is simply “hock”, this book will come as a revelation and a delight, displaying as it does the splendid richness and variety of the great wines of Germany. The connoisseur will appreciate the discussion of vintage good and bad, the notes on tastings of outstanding wines, and the comprehensive survey of Germany’s wine producing villages and vineyards from Koblenz to the Swiss border.

The implantation of the vine in Germany has posed special problems, and German vigneron has needed all his resource and skill to solve them. Methods of cultivation, grape harvesting and wine making differ in certain respects from those practiced elsewhere. This book describes them lucidly and excitingly. It provides a short history of German wine and interprets the detailed and highly informative labels to be found on German wines. There are chapters on German sparkling wine ( sekt) and brandy, chapters on traditional casks, bottles, and glasses for German wine – and more besides.

Andre L. Simon, founder and President of the Wine and Food Society, is the doyen of writers on wine. He first visited the wine lands of Germany nearly sixty years ago, and acquired then once and for all a deep love and understanding of Rhine and Moselle. S. F. (Fritz) Hall-garten, head of a leading firm of wine merchants, is an authority on all aspects of German wine. Together, they have produced a text that will delight and inform both the expert and the novice.
