Joll’s book on anarchism, with its emphasis on ideological roots and consequences, as well as on the historical sweep of anarchistic movements, has now been revised in light of new historical studies and also brought up to date. The student rebellions of the late 1960s as well as the terrorism of groups like Baader-Meinhof are examined and placed into a larger context. As long as there are continuities in New Left thought and action in contemporary politics, this study will remain the classic work in its field.
