Hannes Lindemann, M.D., born 1922, crossed the Atlantic alone, 1955 in an African dugout canoe and 1956 in a stock-production folding kayak. the smallest boat ever to conquer the oceans. He successfully undertook these almost unimaginable quests to experience the problems of the shipwrecked in these tiny crafts himself, Dr. Lindemann made the headlines in those days. LIFE magazine featured his story in a cover article. His voyages are part of the great pioneer achievements in the history of humankind.
